James began his career in the City with Berwin Leighton Paisner before moving to regional heavyweight Clarke Willmott. He then returned to the North-West, working with Napthens, Gorvins and Jolliffe & Co before most recently heading up his own practice Modus Legal, based in Chester.

James specialises in advising owner-managed businesses, companies and partnerships. This could mean advising on setting up or buying or selling a business or company or in the normal course of a business, helping with corporate governance, or contract drafting, particularly if it involves IT or intellectual property. James also advises businesses on more specialised needs, such as franchising and employee share schemes. James also works with insolvency practitioners to advise on rescuing or restructuring struggling businesses.

Clients often comment that James has explained the law and its implications for them in clear and simple language. This means clients feel confident about the decisions they make and understand the consequences of those decisions.

Away from his desk James enjoys a good walk followed by good real ale in good company. In quieter moments he plays the viola and writes the odd short story.
